Tielman Marais Park

Tielman Marais Park was identified as a key focus area in the Bellville Integrated Recreation Framework, developed by the Yes& team in collaboration with New Urban. The vision for the park is to create a connected system of recreational spaces that enhance safety, promote ecological diversity, and improve the overall functionality of the area. Situated along the Elsieskraal River, which flows north to south, the park holds significant potential to become a well-used and active public space, fostering improved pedestrian connections throughout the area.

Currently, the park is perceived as unsafe, prompting residents to call for interventions to address this issue. A primary pathway is proposed to link Jack Muller Park with the broader open space system, enhancing pedestrian activity and connectivity. Additional meandering walkways through the park aim to encourage greater public interaction with the space in a positive and inclusive way. To further support connectivity, a safe pedestrian bridge will span the river. The park’s entrances will be designed to feel open and inviting, maintaining the park’s spacious character while improving accessibility.

To enhance the park’s ecological diversity, the canalized river will be transformed into a natural stream with reintroduced indigenous trees and riverine vegetation to attract birdlife and other fauna. Areas of the river will be softened and decanalised, creating wetland habitats that improve water quality and support ecological diversity. Proposed interventions include the installation of weirs and attenuation ponds along the river’s length, designed to further enhance water quality and create opportunities for ecological restoration.

The reimagined Tielman Marais Park aims to provide a safe, vibrant, and ecologically rich environment, offering recreational opportunities for residents while fostering a deeper connection to nature.

Activated park space:

Creating a safe and well used environment is a priority for Tielman Marais Park. It is important that the introduced pathways through the path are well lit and that areas that are hidden and attract anti-social behaviors are designed out of the park. Activities that create passive surveillance should be encouraged. It is believed that there is enough foot traffic, office workers and residents in the nearby vicinity to support a commercial activation. In fact, we believe that there is a distinct lack of outdoor gathering spaces of this nature in the Bellville CBD. A series of ramps, platforms and steps would take people into the space from Voortrekker Road and there is an introduced ramp that allows small vehicles to enter the intermediate level of the park space.

There is also an opportunity to host markets and food trucks within the space and the access between Voortrekker RD and the intermediate level of the park space has been configured to allow for this.
