LIV Fisantekraal
LIV, a globally operating NGO based in Durban, is establishing a new base in the Fisantekraal community near Cape Town. This site will serve as the Cape Town headquarters for the LIV Foundation and provide much-needed community facilities. The primary function of the site will be an Early Childhood Development (ECD) center, supporting children in Fisantekraal. In addition, LIV has identified the need for spaces dedicated to adult skills development and social enterprise initiatives.
The LIV ECD site is located within the Garden Cities Greenville development. The design carefully considers the placement and layout of activities within the school grounds and their relationships with the surrounding streets. Baobab Street, to the south, will become the main access route for the second phase of the Fisantekraal/Greenville development and is planned to host key community and commercial facilities. High-activity uses on the LIV site are strategically positioned along this edge. The intersection of Baobab and Ebony Streets at the southwestern corner of the site, being the most visually prominent, is seen as a focal point that should be celebrated.
The initial phase of the crèche and play areas is positioned along the northern boundary, near adjacent residential developments, ensuring accessibility for the learners and parents, most of whom will access the site on foot. The entrance and vehicular drop-off for the crèche are located at the site’s most accessible point, aligning with pedestrian and vehicular movement patterns.
A productive food garden is placed at the northern corner of the site, optimized for maximum sunlight throughout the day. Rainwater harvesting systems have also been incorporated into the layout to support the garden’s irrigation needs.
Given the site’s exposure to prevailing summer and winter winds, tree planting is planned as windbreaks, enhancing comfort and usability. Additionally, the design organizes spaces around a series of informal courtyards, providing sheltered areas for activities while fostering a sense of community and connection.
This thoughtful approach integrates functionality, sustainability, and community needs, creating a dynamic and supportive environment for Fisantekraal residents.
