Langa Market Feasibility Study
This project focused on Langa’s informal markets, exploring options for two new market spaces through community engagement and feasibility testing. Langa, known for its vibrant street markets and entrepreneurial spirit, faces challenges including limited infrastructure, regulatory constraints, and competition from formal businesses. To address these issues, the City of Cape Town initiated a feasibility study for two market facilities: a meat market at 28 Rhodes Street and an arts and crafts market at the corner of King Langalibalele Drive and Lerotholi Avenue.
The project aimed to improve trading conditions by creating dignified, functional spaces for local vendors. The proposed meat market would accommodate approximately 20-30 traders, while the arts and crafts market was designed for 9 full time traders. The craft market includes a forecourt to the Pass Office Museum, a historically significant building within Langa, providing a dignified entrance space for gathering. These markets were envisioned as inclusive hubs to enhance livelihoods, generate jobs, and stimulate economic activity. A key focus was on improving trade practices, ensuring food and environmental safety, and contributing to a resilient local food system that benefits both traders and residents of Langa.
Yes& Studio collaborated with the City of Cape Town’s Area Economic Development team and local stakeholders to understand site conditions and to ensure the design and planning process reflected community input gathered through workshops and surveys. The project involved a situational analysis of the sites and technical feasibility studies. By aligning infrastructure improvements with the needs of traders and the community, the project laid the foundation for a vibrant marketplace that supports Langa’s rich cultural heritage and economic potential.
