4th Avenue Market Street

Fourth Avenue, situated at the edge of the Mitchells Plain CBD, is a vibrant street hosting a variety of markets, including builders', plumbing, and electrical markets. These markets, primarily operated by the South African Women’s Informal Traders’ Association (SAWITA), are well-managed and popular with visitors. However, they are currently separated by fences and other barriers, making it challenging for pedestrians to navigate seamlessly between the different market areas.

The proposed feasibility and vision plan seeks to reimagine Fourth Avenue as an integrated market street rather than a collection of disconnected market spaces. This transformation would allow visitors and pedestrians to move freely along the street, browsing stalls and engaging with the market as a cohesive experience. The market street would be anchored by a transport hub on one end and a new market structure on the other, with “active boxes” strategically placed throughout to provide essential amenities such as security, public restrooms, and meeting rooms, fostering passive surveillance.

To enhance connectivity and safety, a shared and expanded public realm is envisioned, enabling pedestrians to traverse the market easily. The plan includes the introduction of new trees, seating areas, and consistent market branding to unify the space and create a welcoming and cohesive environment.
